Lane

The lane, also commonly referred to as the paint, the key, or the restricted area, represents one of basketball's most strategically important spaces on the court. This rectangular area extends from the baseline to the free throw line and is bounded by lane lines on either side, creating a clearly marked zone that serves as the epicenter of interior basketball action. The lane's dimensions and associated rules fundamentally shape how basketball is played, influencing offensive strategies, defensive schemes, player positioning, and scoring patterns.
