Backboard

The backboard is a raised vertical surface located behind the basket in basketball, serving both structural and functional purposes central to the game. This rectangular or fan-shaped board provides a rebounding surface for missed shots, a target for bank shots, and structural support for the basket and rim. The backboard typically measures six feet wide by three and a half feet tall at the professional and collegiate levels, though youth and recreational backboards may vary in size. Constructed from transparent materials like tempered glass at higher competition levels or alternative materials like acrylic or polycarbonate for recreational use, the backboard has evolved significantly since basketball's invention while remaining fundamental to how the game is played.
